West Somerset Railway Takes You On A Magical Journey

14 April 2015

shutterstock_95417488_smlIf you’re after a little British Heritage and History, how about a trip on the Longest Heritage Railway in England?

This branch of the Great Western Railway is a true look back in time. You can take a nostalgic journey through glorious countryside, or study the railway and the industrial heritage WSR aims to maintain and preserve. With historic steam locomotives, wagons and coaches taking you on a 20-mile journey through 10 unique stations, this is a day out full of fascination, history and culture. The first station on the West Somerset Railway is about at 45 min drive away from Lakeside, so be prepared to make a day of it.

The surrounding countryside is home to the Quantock Hills, and Exmoor, villages and farms amongst leafy lanes, the cliffs and coast of the Bristol Channel (with views of South Wales in the distance), Churche Towers, Dunster Castle and the seaside at Minehead all along the way.

But back to the trains! Most of them have buffet cars that sell light refreshments from local produce and all of them have toilets. There are disabled accessible toilets at Bishops Lydeard, Crowcombe Heathfield, Stogumber Watchet and Minehead stations. Disabled toilets are also available in the Lorna Doone carriage. There are seats for passengers in wheelchairs but it is a good idea to book these in advance. Oh, and one more thing, if your dog wants to come along, it’s only £2.00 per dog.

You can travel on the Railway with either single / return tickets to selected stations, but your best bet is to purchase a ‘Day Rover’ pass which gives you unlimited travel across all 10 stations for the day, meaning you can make as many stop off as you can fit in! Check here for prices and deals.

Are you up for a challenge? The Heritage Hunter mixes history & heritage with modern day technology – giving you an Augmented Reality Hunt. Download the brand new ‘Heritage Hunter’ App and watch as the railway comes to life on your screen. Once it’s downloaded, you don’t need to be online for it work – meaning it’s a great little tool to use out in the sticks! If this seems up your alley, then just select the ‘Heritage Hunter Rover’ option when booking online or over the phone.

Other Upcoming activities and events to look out for include:

  • The St George’s Day Special Fish & Chips lunch (Thursday 23rd April)
  • Ladies 1920’s & 30’s Theme Day (Saturday 2nd May)
  • Volunteer Open Day (Sunday 10th May)

You can also take part in a Driver Experience Course! Ranging from one-day charters to 2-day courses to make your dreams of being a train driver a reality.
