Meet the Witch of the Wookey Hole Caves

05 May 2015

Witches Kitchen chamber1The Wookey Hole Caves in Somerset, just 40 minutes from Lakeside, are some of the most spectacular in Britain and have been a source of myths and legends for centuries. The river flowing from them bubbles up from an underground world of stalagmites and stalagtites which are home to the Wookey Witch.

A day ticket for a tour of the Wookey Hole includes free Pirate Island Adventure Golf amongst 20 other attractions at the site! Why not check out the Monster Mill, Life Size Dinosaurs, Pirates of the River Axe, or the Victorian Penny Arcade? You can also visit the Magical Mirror Maze, the Cave Museum, the Fairy Garden or the Handmade Paper Mill and of course not forgetting meeting the Wookey Witch. There is also the New Circus Show at weekends and school holidays.

As for the Witch? Well, legend has it that the villagers of Wookey asked the Abbot of Glastonbury to help get rid of the troublesome village witch. So he appointed Father Bernard to perform an exorcism to rid the village of the witch and restore harmony amongst the people. Father Bernard searched, and found the witch in the caves where he doused her with holy water. The dousing worked, the witch was banished and all that is left of her is the witch-shaped stalagmite that remains to this day. (You can meet a re-enactment witch on-site who brings the story to life).

Is it said that this story may have come from the crew who excavated the Stone Age cave and found a Romano-British woman who was said to have been a Shaman. The artifacts they found with her are in the Wells Museum.

Day tickets are £18.00 for adults and £12.00 for children (3-14) and seniors 60 and over. Students with ID are also £12.00. Children under three are free and if you buy your tickets online you get a 15% discount. You can also get an annual pass for £25.00.

Wookey Hole Caves tours run until the end of October from 10am to 5pm (except for 9th May and 15th May when the last tour is at 4.00pm).

Wookey Hole is two miles from the medieval city of Wells, and 20 miles from Bath (A39), Bristol (A37) and Weston Super Mare (A371). There is a large free car park on site. Take the M5 Exit junction 22 from north or south and follow the brown tourist signs. If you are coming from Bath, take the A39 to Wells.
