Dunster by Candlelight 2015

06 November 2015

shutterstock_252386044 copyEvery year, on the first Friday and Saturday in December, the village of Dunster returns to its medieval roots and is transformed once again to its quaint beginnings.

Dunster by Candlelight has been a tradition since 1986 when Hannah Bradshaw and the Dunster Traders Association created the event, then when the Traders Association was disbanded, the Candlelight Committee (that continues to run the event on behalf of the Traders of Dunster) was formed.

This year, the magic takes place on Friday 4th December from 5pm to 9.30pm, and Saturday 5th December from 4pm to 9.30pm. Located just 35 miles away from Lakeside Holiday Park, this fun filled, family evening is certainly one for the calendar as visitors are swept back to a simpler time and the streets are flooded with candlelight and merriment.

At 5.30pm on both evenings, the Lantern Lighting Procession begins on the Steep and continues through the village, as all the lanterns are lit one by one. Join families and friends and revel in the recreation of Dunster’s enduring past, as stilt walkers in glorious colourful costumes guide you through the streets, hanging the lanterns and restoring Dunster to its festive medieval appearance. There is street entertainment with Carol Singers, Morris Dancers and hand bell ringers, and there is a large fairground organ leading choirs in their song in the Parish Church.

The Traders of Dunster pay for the event in aid of Somerset’s St Margaret’s Hospice, where funds are gathered in street collections and from programme sales. Programmes cost £1 each, and are on sale in Dunster shops from the middle of October. They are also available during the Candlelight evenings in the Hospice Shop (on the right, down the street from the Yarn Market) and in the Exmoor Visitor Centre, which can be found at the top of the steps as you exit the Park and Ride bus. Alternatively, if you have a PayPal account, you can order yours online up until midday on the 30th November, costs will incur a small Postage and Packing fee for delivery and can be purchased here.
