Chippy Challenge – The Best Fish and Chips in Somerset

21 July 2017

What do you think of when you think of a British coastal summer break? Sand? Sea? Ice Cream? What about fish and chips! This traditional British delicacy is a staple of beach holidays and we like to think we’ve got some of the best fish and chips in the country here in Somerset.

Fish and Chips are a coastal staple and so good quality is vital. With so many places to choose from, we thought we'd share our favourites.

Of course, we’re huge fans of the fish and chips served at the Lakeside on-site restaurant – the Boathouse. As with all of the Boathouse menu – which includes a number of pub grub favourites – the fish and chips offers a tasty and hearty meal that’ll really get you in that holiday mood; we can’t recommend it enough! But what if you’re out and about touring the local area? Well luckily Somerset has a huge range of chip shops to choose from and we’ve selected some of our favourites below.

Winstons Fish Bar – Weston-super-Mare

There’s something special about eating great fish and chips by the sea and that’s exactly what Winstons Fish Bar offers – delicious pieces of fish with crisp batter and huge piles of chips served on the beachfront and always with a smile. The seaside food experience doesn’t stop at fish however. Winstons also offers chicken, fry-ups and other British classics all with the same quality standards as their fish dishes. Coupling seaside atmosphere with good food Winstons makes for the perfect place to indulge in this classic coastal meal.

Superchips – Burnham-On-Sea

This small fish and chip takeaway offers large steaming portions of fish and chips at low prices. Primarily a takeaway with a small seating area, Superchips offers few in the way of interior luxuries but more than makes up for it with crisp batter and mountains of chips. Superchips is a great place to nip into for a tasty takeout lunch while you explore Burnham-On-Sea.

Rob’s Fish Bar – Highbridge

Located in Highbridge, Rob’s Fish Bar is a small modern chip shop that offers a wide range of British classics from traditional Battered Cod to Pineapple Fritters. With it’s own car park and attentive and eager to please staff, Rob’s is the ideal place to collect a hot fish dinner on your way in-to or out-of Burnham-on-Sea by car.

Esplanade Fish Bar – Burnham-On-Sea

Located on Burnham’s seafront promenade the Esplande Fish Bar combines good value, tasty fish and a sea-front view. All of the classics are available (with gluten free options) at the Esplande Fish Bar as well as Burgers and Jacket Potatoes. Don’t fancy sitting inside? Then why not take a seat on the restaurants’ parade seating area or get your fish to go and sit on the beach itself? The Esplande fish bar will even deliver locally if you want a hot fish supper without leaving the comfort of your own holiday home on Lakeside Holiday Park.

Papa’s – Weston-super-Mare

Depending on who you ask, Papa’s Traditional Fish and Chips might just be the best chippy in the country, let alone just in Somerset! This award-winning restaurant has been located in Weston-super-Mare since 1966 and offers both take-away and sit-down meals – though be prepared to wait for a table if you’ve not booked, as Papa’s reputation precedes it! Papa’s offers a wide range of fresh fish cooked in the traditional chip shop style – from the huge Jumbo Cod (referred to as the Moby Dick meal) to Skate, Halibut Steak and even Cod Roe. Should you ever be hungry near Waterloo Street Papa’s Traditional Fish and Chips should be on the top of your mind.

So there you are, just some of our favourite fish and chip shops in the area that are well worth visiting during your tours of Somerset. If you’re after something other than fish and chips there are a wide range of other options available, including Lakeside’s own Boathouse, serving up delicious pub grub daily.
